The UK government is to take action of packaging waste by asking industry to meet new European targets. Minister for Competition and Consumer Affairs, Nigel Griffiths, has expressed his wish to minimise waste and its harmful environmental effects. He has also voiced concern of the UK's delay in implementing the EC Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and the possible problems it could cause when trying to achieve the final targets specified. Mr Griffiths plans to contact 170 companies and trade organisations to invite them to two seminars which will look at key packaging waste issues including limiting the use of heavy metals and recycling packaging.
