The National Science Council has said it has approved the application by Japan's Ohara Inc to build an NT$400M (US$13.14M) optical glass factory in the Central Taiwan Science Park. The NSC noted that Ohara accounts for more than half of the optical glass market share in Japan, and that its outstanding glass-melting technologies have provided global consumers with thigh quality optical glasses used in digital cameras and other telecommunication devices. "Construction is set to be completed with 2 years after which about 33% of the mother company's production capacities will be transferred to Taiwan," said Ohara Senor MD, Hitoshi Sekido. He added the investment project is being carried in the wake of the firm's considerable losses caused by the March 11 earthquake in Japan.
