Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been accused of being the worst offenders of packaging pollution found on UK beaches, accounting for as much as 25%. Ocean conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) arranged the UK's largest ever nation-wide survey of packaging pollution found on the UK's beaches and rivers, conducted by environmental consultancy Eunomia Research and Consulting, featuring more than 45,000 volunteers during SAS's recent Big Spring Beach Clean series. During the 229 cleans in April, 49,413 pieces of pollution were picked up, of which 20,-45 were branded, with Coca-Cola producing the largest proportion (15.5%) and PepsiCo (10.3%).
