The USA-based GMIC is organising a "Strength in Glass" contest, in which prizes worth a total of $50,000 will be offered for the best student ideas for new/innovative applications of glass based on a 50 times improvement in the strength of manufactured glass. The contest is being sponsored by the GMIC; the ICG; the Glass & Optical Materials Div of ACS, & the NSF-International Materials Inst on New Functionality in Glasses. Entrants are invited to prepare four page type concept submissions, each focussing on a single opportunity for or potential impact of products & components made from a glass whose practical strength is 500,000 psi (3.5GPa). Opportunities could include new applications; better performances of systems using glass components; lower cost, higher efficiency, manufacturing using glass; energy savings. Email: dransom@gmic.org
