Research Frontiers Inc, a developer of smart window films, has conducted a large-scale test of its light control films at licensee MSC Speciality Films' manufacturing plant. The films produced in this initial test contained some inhomogeneities, as had been expected. The flaws were said to be correctable and the test was pronounced a success. Research Frontiers' suspended particle device (SPD) films provide variable light transmission for windows, controlled by means of an applied voltage. They are currently being developed for practical applications by MSC speciality Films & Hankuk Glass of Korea. The recent test was intended to establish the coatability of the films and assuming the flaws can be ironed out, the only remaining test will be to demonstrate the film's durability before commercial production can begin.
