NASA is studying HPFS fused silica glass material by Corning Inc, as part of the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE). According to Corning, the project is designed to investigate the stability and durability of a number of materials, which are planned for future space applications, and is geared toward determining long-term effects a space environment has on various materials, such as its HPFS fused silica glass material. The space shuttle Discovery delivered the materials to the International Space Station (ISS). Corning is no stranger to NASA; it provided the window glass for every manned space launch of NASA, as well as all for the glass for the space station. This current project differs from previous ones because the MISSEs are the first externally mounted experiments conducted on the ISS.
