Asahi Glass and Pilkington are to invest about US$100m through a joint venture in a sheet glass production facility in Spain. The new plant will have a capacity to produce 500 tonnes/day as early as 2000. Asahi, which controls about 20% of the world sheet glass market, had considered setting up its own plant in Spain but was unsure of the sales capacity in Europe to sustain such a developement, reports Shipping and Trade News. The venture gives Asahi a European production base while Pilkington, which already processes sheet glass for cars in Spain, has imported the glass from other countries. (whole item)
