Selby Tells Residents Where Recyclables End Up

Selby Council said it has reassured residents that materials collected for recycling are processed in the local area & recycled in the UK & mainland Europe, in the light of media speculation that recyclables from certain councils are being dumped abroad. Chair of Selby District Council's environment board, councillor Chris Metcalfe, said: "Its really important our residents know that the materials they leave out for recycling really do get recycled; the majority of material is recycled here in Britian. Not only that, but we try to used processing companies based within or near the Selby district as much as possible to support local business & reduce road mileage of the material once its been collected. "By ensuring our recycling is sorted & processed in the local area wherever possible, we can reasure residents that what they put out for recycling does get recycled." really does make a difference to the environment". During 2007/8 Selby residents and businesses were said to have recycled 12,500 tonnes of material - said to equate about a third of all waste produced.
