Over the last 5 years, the screw cap market has grown to represent a total of approximately 2 billion bottles. There are two principal reasons that winemakers or wine production managers have turned to screw caps - firstly to avoid the cork taint problem (TCA) which represents a loss of 5 to 10% of tainted wine each year; secondly, to avoid the unpredictability of the wine ageing process. With screw caps, wine quality remain consistent, which is why many winemakers around the world are now opting for this form of closure. Wine producers are pretty much guaranteed that their product will be drunk in the same condition it was bottled in - the quality will remain consistent.
