Schott - Joint Venture On Coatings For Pet Bottles

Hamburg-based SIG Corpoplast & Schott AG have founded a joint venture, Schott SIG Barrier Technologies GmbH. The new company has its headquarters in Mainz & will develop & manufacture coating modules for use in beverage filling machines. Clear barrier layers help preserve beverages contained in plastic bottles for a longer period of time. A coating facility with the name Plasmax generates transparent & completely recyclable barrier layers on the inside of PET bottles. "This glass-like coating enables us to combine the advantages of both glass & PET, including gas impermeability & resistance to breakage," said S Behle, MD of Schott SIG. "The inside coating prevents PET from releasing material into beverages," he added. The objective behind the joint venture is to develop new methods of coating plasma & supply SIG with PICVD coating components for PET food packaging.
