Schott is pressing ahead with the expansion of its production capacity for glass tubing with the start of construction of three melting tanks in Valasske Mezirici in the Czech Republic. The glass tubing is used in the backlights of display screens found in laptops, computer monitors and flat screen televisions. Dr Uno Ungeheur, chairman of the management board at Schott said: "We are experiencing a stable, two-digit annual growth rate. The expansion of this promising business area will create 100 new jobs at the Valasske Mezirici manufacturing facility, while at the same time securing the jobs based in Germany in this production segment." Three years ago Schott entered into the market of special glass needed for backlights in flat screen displays. The glassmaker believes it is now the second largest supplier in this area.
