Schott Consolidates Bio-Glass

Schott has set up a new subsidiary, Schott Nexterion, to consolidate its activities in glass substrates for biochips. These include a new coated glass slide to immobilize DNA molecules, and more new products are planned including ultimately services for drug discovery and clinical diagnostics. Schott has, meanwhile, taken majority control of ULM Photonics in Germany, a spin-off from Ulm University, which claims world leadership in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers. Schott recently celebrated making its 250 millionth glass component (a flat screen) for televisions since production began in 1936. (whole item)
