Saint-Gobain has started construction work on a new 7,000 square metre extension to its float glass plant at Eggborough. The extension will involve the construction of the UK's first magnetron coating facility and will create 60 new work positions. Production is due to start spring/04 and the new employees are being recruited among the many redundant coal miners in the area. The investment was awarded a £750,000 grant from Yorkshire Forward. MD Mr Guillerme Huguen, said that the new coater would allow the company to capitalise on the dramatic growth in demand for this type of glass in the UK and ensure Eggborough stays ahead of its competition, adding that the coating unit will have no negative environmental impact.
