Saint-Gobain is looking to increase its share in the UK flat glass market through its new float glass manufacturing facility in Eggborough, Yorkshire, which was offically inaugurated on 13 April by Saint-Gobain chairman Jean-Louis Beffa and Richard Caborn, UK minister for trade. Saint-Gobain Glass UK (SGG UK) will produce 185,000 tonnes of Planilux (clear float) glass/year and should reach full capacity by the end of 2000. In addition to offering the full range of Saint-Gobain glass products, it will also reduce delivery times to around two days from upwards of seven. Representing an investment of more than £65m, the facility is arguably one of the most technically advanced plants of its type in Europe. (whole item)
