The Romanian government will cover the costs of providing electric power supply infrastructure for the new Saint-Gobain glassworks at Calaraski, in the south-east of the country. The EUR 2.7M funds will be backed by credits undertaken by state-owned power utility Electrica, according to sources at the Economy Ministry. French industrial group Saint-Gobain will invest around EUR 100M to build the glassworks, scheduled to start making products for the construction sector in 2006. According to sources, the French investor asked Romania to pay for work on the power supply network. In June 2003, the government authorised Electrica to take on internal or external loans to the limit of $200M in order to finance power supply networks and also for certain investment projects, including the Saint-Gobain development. Around 200 jobs will be created.
