Rockware Glass has implemented a customised electronic pallet tracking system which will enable it to trace the history of pallets of jars or bottles, from production to delivery. The system is operated by Christian Salvesen, a logistics consultancy, and the warehousing and transport division of the Malcolm Group. Using mobile computers housed in forklift trucks, drivers scan specially produced barcoding on each pallet to record its movement by time, date and operator. Pallets are recorded when they are fed onto labelling lines, reclassified or sent between manufacturing and storage sites. From this, Salvesen builds up a dedicated history for each pallet through to its eventual delivery to the customer. The system negotiates the driver through complex put-away procedures which take into account the variable sizes of bottles and packing information.
