Similarly, the report states, changing demographics of teh world population and population ageing is likely to affect the glass packaging industry interms of design and consuming habits, and should drive growth, particularly in the medical glass packaging market. However, it adds that the glass packaging market still sufferes competition from plastic and paper-based packaging, which it says caputre most of the growth in the global packaging industry. Glass should be able to retain market share in high-end products though, thanks to the "premium" image of the material and its natural characteristics. The report also claims that technology is the key to the industry remaining competitive, and highlights toughened glass and new lightweighting as examples of production techniques that will significantly improve the positoin of glass against other packaging materials. Other sournces of growth for the industry include: Food and safety issues; increasing demand for organic food; the importance of recycling; and both alcoholic beverage consumption and rising cosmetic sales in emerging markets.
