A Reminder - Two Pieces Of Waste Legislation Manufacturers Should Be Aware Of

The WEEE Directive has been delayed until June/06. The collection & recycling of waste electronic & electrical equipment will be the responsibility of manufacturers & retailers from then. Producers will have to finance treatment & recycling/recovery of separately collected WEEE in the UK to specified treatment standards. Retailers will be obliged to offer take-back services to householders. The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical & electronic equipment from 1/07/05. Manufacturers putting products using non-compliant components onto the EU market after then will be breaking the law. Dealers/distributors of such products are not directly responsible for complying with ROHS, but should soon start accepting only ROHS-compliant components, in order to meet the requirements.
