Norway's Elkem ASA is the world's largest producer of microsilica, often referred to as silica fume, which is sold as Elkem Microsilica in various grades. A by-product of ferrosilicon and silicon metal production, one of the key markets for microsilica is as a key ingredient in advanced low, ultra-low and cement-free refractory castables. Microsilica is highly reactive during sintering, which leads to improved ceramic bonding at reduced firing temperatures. It is also employed in mortars, gunning mixes and other unshaped material.
