Casepak's new £21M state-of-the-art materials recycling facility in Leicester has now opened its doors for business after US company Bulk Handling Systems completed the final plant installations and officially handed over the facility on 30 September. The new facility, on Braunstone Frith Ind Est in Leicester, combines automate technology with intensive manual quality control, making it one of the most advanced facilities in the UK, says Casepak. Once in full operation, the MRF will sort mixed collections of paper, card, plastic, metal and glass and will recover 95% of the material processed as a resource. Most of the recovered materials will be sold to UK reprocessors for manufacture into new products and materials. "The MRF will offer substantial pre-and post-treatment storage capacity, which will enable us to provide exceptional resource management flexibility for both the municipal and commercial and industrial sectors," said Mark Smith, joint MD at Casepak. "Providing additional capacity is essential of local communities are to increase recycling rates above 50%." Casepak processes and trades 145,000/t of source segregated paper, card and plastics each year from its Enderby facility in Leicestershire. It is anticipated that the new facility will add a further 150,000 tonnes of processing capacity for single and dual stream dry mixed recyclables.
