Deep cuts in R&D budgets at the national level are pushing researchers towards European financing for their activities, including in recycling and resource efficiency. Under the new Horizon 2020 financing strategy covering the European research budget for the upcoming seven years, "sustainability" is the key word running through all the sub-programmes.
