Over 95% of Czech citizens are able to sort their packaging waste, but only 69% do so. That is the message from the Czech green dot scheme EKO-KOM, citing a recent study. Many people said that they would sort more, if they had sorting bins closer to home. The Czech Republic may not have as many bins as neighbouring Austria, with well over 1M bins for some 8M people, however, it does not do too bad. "On average, people have 143 metres to to to the nearest sorting bin," said EKO-Kom's Katerina Saloudova. Each Czech consumer collected more than 43kg per year in 2006, some 7kg more than 2005. In total, 66% of all one-way packaging, 547,645 tonnes, was recycled. This article describes the "green dot" system in the Czech Republic in more detail.
