Nippon Electric Glass (UK) could use at least 6,000/t recycled cathode ray tube (CRT) glass this year, provided the cullet was available locally, according to its director, S Tanaka. "Due to current unavailability, we would have to import and this poses legislative disadvantages and financial constraints," he said. "It would make better business sense to source locally." NEG has been a major user of recycled CRT glass since suitable recycling technologies were developed in Japan in 1998. Research by WRAP into potential markets for recycled CRT glass has identified three potential uses for lead-free screen or panel glass, and two for lead-containing funnel glass or mixed CRT glass. Four are thought to have potential to use considerable volumes of CRT glass cullet: bricks/tiles; new CRTs; fluxing agent for brick/ceramics; and fluxing agent for smelting.
