According to a report in the Ottawa Citizen, Corning plans to sell its houseware division by the end of the year. Corning's housewares sales represent only 17% of total company sales of $3700m, and make a net profit of only $38m. Due to the reduced profit margins in tableware, the company intends to concentrate on its more profitable, high technology products, such as fibre optic cables. Cookware sales are down because fewer people are getting married and setting up house in the US, says Betty Shields of Betty's Kitchen microwave and cookware stores. (whole item)
