Lubisol Engineering Co. is offering its Si-Seal Crown Design technology to glass makers to guard against rat-holing in silica crowns, a special problem with oxy-fuel. The main feature of Si-Seal Crown Design is a special protective layer placed between the main crown and the thermal insulation of the furnace. The protective layer hermetically seals the crown and prevents the passing of hot aggressive gases, thus reducing or eliminating the rat-holing. The protective layer forms a strong adhesive bond towards the silica bricks at temperatures up to 1600 deg C, and provides high corrosive resistance. Coefficient of expansion is equal or very close to that of silica - 1.28%. The technique is suitable for application on a cold crown, during or after heat-up, and also for hot repair.
