Two automotive innovations by PPG Industries were honoured when the 100 most significant technological breakthroughs in new products and processes for 1998 were redognized by R & D magazine. Officials from PPG representing the Sungate aerial windscreen and automotive powder clear coat products attended a banquet to receive R&D 100 Awards, which have been dubbed the "Oscars of Invention." The editors of the magazine and a team of as many as 70 experts judged the entries, which were received from all around the world. PPG's Sungate aerial windscreen helps keep the sun's heat out of automibile interiors through the use of a higher performance coating incorporated within the windscreen's laminated layers. The coating also enables the windscreen to operate as the vehicles radio aerial. The coating keeps car interiors cooler than conventional tinted windscreens.
