Waste cathode ray tube (CRT) television glass could be used in the production of bricks and tiles; ceramics; foam glass; new CRTs; or as smelting flux for scrap metal, to help meet the requirements of the EU Directive on Waste Electronic Equipment. The idea has been mooted as part of a research project in the UK by WRAP. Supported by Glass Technology Services, the project aims to identify potential markets for waste CRT glass and to assess the economic and technical barriers to all applications but particularly to higher value ones. It will also develop the necessary standards and processes for viable commercial scale recycling of CRTs. Barium oxide in the panel glass and lead oxide in the funnel glass limit recycling options and rule out its reuse as cullet for container glass or glass fibre manufacture. Another problem is the cost of separating two types of glass.
