A dozen senior bar workers from Plymouth have become the first in the South West to earn a qualification in responsible alcohol sales. Staff from the Eagle, the Walrus, the Yard Arm, Admiral MacBride, the Navy, Kularoos, Varsity, the Clipper Inn & the Wee Clipper Bar, took part in the one day training scheme at the Barbican's Wee Clipper Bar. They learned about the effects of alcohol on people, licensing law, protection of children, social responsibility, recognising drunkenness & the duty not to serve drunks, & alcohol-related crime. They were then examined for the BIIAB Level 2 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing, accredited by qualifications regulator Ofqual. The training was set up by brewer SABMiller in conjunction with BIIAB, the qualification awarding body of the BII (British Institute Innkeeping), the professional body for the licensed retail sector. SABMiller provided funding for the training after Plymouth-based Keith De Bruin, BII's South West Region chairman, notified publicans.
