The British Plastics Fed has called on the UK Food Standards Agency to support deferred implementation of the EU Super Regulation (SR) for food contact plastics. The SR is intended to replace all previous directives on food contact regulation. A working document on the draft regulation was released in October and the BPF has written to the head of food contact materials unit at the Food Standards Agency, to highlight concerns that the issues require further time for consideration. BPF director of public affairs Philip Law said,"The industry places supreme importance on the safety of consumers & supports the aims of this legislation. However, there is a need for realism. The mechanics of the draft Super Regulation are not based on consumers' real-life exposure to substances & make demonstrable compliance nigh impossible to the plastics industry".
