Packaging is part of daily life, but it usually ends up in the bin with little thought to what happens after it has been thrown away. Piles of packaging ends up in landfill sites & in SW England, some sites could be full within 5 years. In response to this growing waste problem a new SW award will showcase businesses developing or using more `sustainable' packaging. This will help both the industry & consumers to think about the impacts of packaging on the environment, on society & the economy. Marks & Spencer & Clipper are among the winners of the Pioneers of Packaging Awards, announced in Taunton, with runners up including Yeo Valley Organic & a Sharp's Brewery partnership project. ValueForm have also picked up a special award for Best Regional Innovation with a maize based alternative to the ubiquitous plastic food tray.
