Phase equilibria relationships within the MgO-SiO2-SrO (CaO) ternary and ZrO2-MgO-SiO2-SrO (CaO) quarternary systems are compared. The effect of the SrO/SiO2 ratio on the formation of different secondary phases in MgO-based refractory compositions was investigated. The results from phase equilibria and microstructure studies predicted that materials containing SrO have a higher working temperature potential and may be a suitable choice wherever the presence of CaO needs to be avoided.
