Pay As You Throw

Dublin City Council rolled out its variable charging residual collection service on 1 Jan/05. The scheme charges householders on a sliding scale, encouraging a reduction in residual volumes. Each bin features an electronic tag to determine how many times it is put out for collection per month. This is then used to calculate the cost of the collection. Smaller bins incur reduced charges. The fees do not apply to people on social welfare, and those whose income falls below tax thresholds are also exempt. (whole item)
