Packaging - No New Targets For 2007

Anyone expecting to see major changes on the packaging front look set to be disappointed in 2007. The long-awaited implementation report on packaging, emerging finally on 6 December, confirmed that the revised targets of Directive 2004/12/EC (55-80% recycling; 60%recovery; 60% recycling for glass & paper/cardboard; 50% metals; 22.5% plastics & 15% wood) would stay the same for the foreseeable future. The Commission report on the impact of Directive 94/62/EC on the environment & on the functioning of the internal market said that it was premature to set new recycling & recovery targets when the previous set of targets had only recently been transposed into national legislation & the latest implementation deadline for those targets is as late as 2015.
