Packaging Month Message In Bottle: Trends In Glass Packaging

Glass has lost market share in some sectors. However, for premium brands glass is still the first choice, being 100% natural, giving brands iconic status. Perrier's distinctive green bottle is an example of this. The basic glass making process has changed little despite benefiting from technical efficiences. Although plentiful in supply in & low in cost & recycling, glass has fallen behind because of its weight. Retailers are under pressure from WRAP to reduce packaging comsumption. A switch to rigid plastics is one way to demonstrate greener credentials but Asda and Marks and Spenver have resisted this. The 2.2m/tpa glass used in packaging is now produced by only 6 companies.
