Fibreglass manufacturer Owens Corning has switched off the furnace at its fibreglass factory in Wrexham, North Wales, provoking criticism that any hope of another company saving the plant had been ended. "If there was any hope of a transfer then they had to keep the tanks running, but this has gone, the tank will implode," said Karen Sinclair, Member of the Welsh Parliament. Owens Corning praised the "fantastic" workforce but defended its decision on the grounds that, in spite of all efforts, the plant had made a loss for the last fibre years and there was not viable. In Owens Corning's opinion, the products cannot be produced in Wrexham without making a loss. (whole item)
