O-I plans to reduce capacity at two of its EU facilities, pending the completion of information-consultation operations of appropriate works councils. Around 460 people would be affected. The plan calls for the closing of the plant at Dusseldorf, as well as one of 2 furnaces in the food container facility at Reimes, FR. The capacity reductions are a further step in O-I's previously announced strategy to optimally align manufacturing capacities with the market & improve operation efficiencies. Both facilities that would be affected were part of O-I's acquisition of BSN Glasspack in 2004, which more than doubled O-I's EU presence. In June, O-I announced the establishment of a new headquarters in Switzerland to centrally manage its operations in 11 countries. If the Dusseldorf plant closes, O-I would have 39 plants in Europe with around 10,200 employees.
