Doncaster is set to adopt a zero waste strategy that, if successful, will turn post-industrial economic decline in the city on its head. The council is already getting to grips with municipal waste and last year Doncaster sent more than 160,000/t to landfill, but a dry kerbside scheme now accepts paper, glass, aluminium and steel cans, textiles and plastics from almost all of the districts 127,000 households. Municipal recycling rates have risen from 3.5 to 14% in 15 months, and has created jobs and revenue.
