Saint-Gobain has submitted a planning application to Selby District Council to build a £60m float glass production plant in Eggborough, Nr Selby, N Yorks. The announcement comes after months of negotiations between Saint-Gobain and bodies including North Yorks County Council, Selby District Council and the Yorkshire & Humberside Development Agency. According to Paul Neeteson, SG's UK general delegate, a number of sites in the region were considered but Eggborough was chosen because of its proximity to a large electricity supply and a good national transport network. Until now, the Uk was the only important European market which did not have a Saint-Gobain float glass production facility. The decision to build in the UK was also prompted by an increase in sales achieved by Saint-Gobain's UK glass processing and installation subsidiary, Solaglas.
