One of Cardiff's major manufacturing employers has announced that it had invited staff to apply for voluntary redundancy. Nippon Electric Glass employs 590 people in Cardiff, which opened in 1995, & makes & supplies glass components for cathode ray tubes. Nippon has been running below capacity & the company has responded to growing fears about job losses by issuing a statement:"Members will be aware that a number of measures have been taken in an effort to reduce the impact of decreased sales & profitability. This has included a reduced furnace pull & shutdowns of panel forming press machines & panel finishing lines. Unfortunately, the external market shows no signs of a sustained long-term recovery & we will, for the foreseeable future, maintain our operation based on a maximum of 3 panel forming press machines & 2 panel finishing lines."
