A new group has been established to address the problem of what to do with a mountain of glass waiting to be recycled. Glass recycling in the S.Island is in crisis with huge stockpiles as it is too expensive to freight it to Auckland. They want the government to impose levies on all glass importers & manufacturers to help ease the situation. CE of Zero Waste NZ Trust Jo Knight says the industry last year signed up to a voluntary levy, but has now shied away from responsibility. However, some concerns may be addressed with the establishment of the Glass Forum, which represents glass manufacturers, importers, fillers & sellers. Its spokesman John Webber says it will address issues surrounding glass packaging & look at uses for the recycled product. Webber says the work will be funded through levies on the entire glass industry, not just importers as was previously the case.
