New Project For Lightweight Glass Packaging

A new research project aimed at cutting the amount of household glass waste going to landfill in the UK has been launched. At present, of the 2.4M/t of container glass in circulation in the UK every year, less than 1M/t is recovered through recycling schemes, potentially leaving over 1M/t destined for landfill. The aim of the project is to minimise the amount of glass used in packaging by manufacturing lighter bottles & jars. The pilot phase of the project should produce an immediate saving of over 7,000/t less glass going to landfill, which should increase to around 150,000/tpy as other brand owners follow the lead taken by the project participants. The project is a collaborative venture which brings together WRAP who are funding the project; Faraday Packaging Partnership, project leader; Glass Technology Services, who are conducting the technical audit, brand owners & British Glass.
