Saint-Gobain is reported to be considering entering the market for very thin glass substrates, used for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). At present, the production of these is dominated by Asahi Glass and Corning, which together hold around 70% of the market, and most of the substrates are produced in Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Output of very thin glass for LCD substrates was 4,300 tonnes in 2003 and is expected to be about 33% higher in 2004. (whole item)
