Crushed glass is already used as aggretate for a number of civil engineering purposes. A novel use of this material as an aggregate to surround agricultural drainage pipes has been successfully tested in New York State, USA. The project attempted to solve two problems simultaneously. First, the County Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) needed new markets for the 2000 tonnes of crushed glass recovered each year. Secondly, the County Soil and Water Conservation District designs and constructs subsurface drainage in poorly drained farmland, and farmers were having to pay for stone aggregate for this application. Crushed glass could provide a solution to both problems.
