New 3-Company Glass Plant To Open In Mexico Producing Tv Screens

A $250m joint venture is being funded by Corning Inc, Samsung of South Korea and Asahi Optical of Japan to build a new glass plant on the Mexican border producing TV glass. The new plant is expected to create between 2,500-5,000 jobs. The maquiladoras along the US-Mexico border are experiencing continued growth despite escalating living probelms. Mexico is currently privatizing some of its power-delivery businesses and there have been reports of energy shortages at some manufacturing plants. But the plant's site is still a good bet, since its customers will be the growing number of high technology companies moving in to take advantage of NAFTA benefits and cheaper labour.
