A plan to create more than 200 jobs at a crisis-hit South Wales glass plant appears to have come to nothing. Vitrium Holdings (Chesterfield) had planned to acquire NEG, in Cardiff Bay, creating more than 200 jobs on the site. However, the land is now likely be sold for property development. The takeover had been seen as a reprieve for troubled NEG, which announced Oct/05 that it would close with the loss of 400 jobs. Glass specialists Vitrium had wanted to use the site in Cardiff Bay, to build the UK's first commercial vitrification plant to convert contaminated waste into a glass product, creating an initial 120 jobs. The land will probably now be used to create warehouses with limited local employment. Vitrium CE John Evans said: "This is a great disappointment. We have been in talks with NEG since the end of last year & we were hopeful of a positive outcome". "We had planned to provide employment opportunities for some staff affected by the closure of the NEG operation. A great number of people have been in touch with us about job vacancies in case the deal had gone through, however, NEG has approached the property market, where it will be able to receive significantly higher offers for the land than we have been able to raise."
