The recently announced Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development & Climate (APPCDS), agreed between the USA, Australia, China, India, Japan & S Korea in July, has received a cautious welcome by most governments. APPCDC is an alternative to the Kyoto Protocol & aims to use technology to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from power stations, without the mandatory reduction targets as set by the Kyoto treaty (which the USA & Australia have refused to ratify). Another important intent is to engage the private sector to this end. There is no doubt that there are serious questions over APPCDC, however, with such countries committed to such a scheme, any existing or new emission reduction technolgies & clean energy source enterprises are in line for a significant boost in profile, development & most crucially, funding.
