Cerveceria Model was founded by Braulio Iriarte in 1922. The brewery quickly became one of the most important in Mexico. Its two main brands, Modelo & Corona were brewed with hops from Bohemia & Saxony & malt from Germany & were sold in the greater Mexico City area. In 1926, the brewery switched over to clear glass bottles; although this glass let the light through & thus accelerated the deterioration process of the hop oils, the step was taken because consumers preferred clear, clean bottles. In 1935 Modelo acquired the brewery Toluca y Mexico & from then on brewed the oldest brand of beer in the country. More brewery acquisitions followed. The group today has its own production sites for glass, card & plastic bottles, machine manufacturers, transport companies, real estate & 492 distributors. The firm concentrates fully on home markets.
