Successful trials have demonstrated the commercial viability & good performance of recycled glass in brick & tile manufacture, filtration, grit blasting, sports turf & cement products, according to Andy Dawe from WRAP. "These trials have highlighted the benefits recycled glass can offer British industry," Mr Dawe said. "By demonstrating the advantages of using it, we have provided a good business case which UK companies will find hard to ignore." Delegates at the GlassAction meeting in Barnsley heard how waste glass had been used in shot blasting of ships to prepare surfaces for painting & coating. Filtration media made from recycled glass proved more effective than other materials at removing suspended solids from effluent; glass used in reprocessed sand had been used successfully to create sports turf; waste glass has been used as a fluxing agent in brick production. WRAP is encouraging the import of wine in bulk, rather than in bottles, to the UK to help improve cullet use there. Bulk shipment already accounts for 20% of wine imports.
