[Landfill Projections] Drinks Industry Sets Tough Targets

Members of the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), may not be sending any waste to landfill by 2020 if current trends continue apace. A report from Defra claims that more than 90% of food and packaging waste was recovered and recycled in 2009, with only 9% sent to landfill. This represents an improvement on its 2008 and 2006 figures, which claimed that 16.5% and 12.5% of this waste was sent to landfill respectively. In related news. members of the FDA are developing a "campaign of engagement with consumers to help them better understand the role of packaging and reduce its impact during 2011. The organisation adds that its targets would be based on part 2 of the Courtauld 2 Commitment that is run by WRAP. However, it said that for companies wishing to reduce the impact of packaging outside this agreement, the FDF would continue to report its achievements in the form of case studies.
