Edinburgh-based Knops Beer Co was founded January 2010 after Robert Knops had perfected his beer recipes in his Dad's garage. Robert studied Brewing & Distilling at the Watt. After working for big brewers for a while, he decided to go it alone. Initially, he looked at building a brewery in Edinburgh, but after doing the sums decided that it would be better to build up the business before spending a lot of capital. So, his products are brewed at Traditional Scottish Ales in Throsk, near Stirling. Robert said he wanted to sell something between the bland and the terrifying beers that are available. To find an ale which lager drinkers would like to try. The first was California Common, a 4.6%ABV Steam Beer but, he cannot call it that for the wrath of Fritz Maytag at Anchor will descend on him! Currently, Knops provides bottled beers to around 20 outlets and one batch a month goes into cask for Edinburgh ale pubs. He has just launched his second beer, at 4.5%ABV called Musselburgh Broke, bottled in a traditional amber glass container.
